Upakar Educational Society is a Non- Government Organisation (NGO) founded in 1996. Upakar is a Hindi term, which means “HELP”. It was started for the purpose of improving educational and socio-economic status of children and women in rural areas of Theni district. It was registered under Tamilnadu Societies Registration Act 1975, at Office of the District Registrar, Periakulam, Theni District (Registration Number: 102 / 1996). For the purpose of organizational operational convenience, Upakar Educational Society’s Administrative Office was shifted from Periyakulam to Dindigul in 2006 and subsequently it transferred its Registration Office from District Registrar of Societies, Periyakulam, Theni district to the Office of the District Registrar of Societies, Dindigul, Dindigul district in 2006 and it got a fresh Registration certificate with New Number:
102 / 1996 (Periyakulam) & 108 / 2006 (Dindigul).

Registered u/s 12 AA. The organisation is registered as Public Charitable Society under section 12 A(a) of the Income-tax Act,1961, for exception from Income Tax, at Office of the Commissioner of Income–Tax.

Upakar Educational Society is registered under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, 1976. Registration No: 075950001

It is a grass root NGO working in the field of orphaned children, child labour, child rights, handicapped children, street and working children and women development in Madurai and Tirunelveli districts of Tamilnadu, India. There are about 9 members in the General Body of Upakar Educational Society including 7 members of Executive Committee. About 54 volunteers are involving in the programmes of Upakar Educational Society including 3 paid staff.
